Ever tried to roll a kayak before? Tried but just didn’t quite get it? Come learn the basic steps in mastering this essential whitewater kayaking skill during this three pool session class. This three-class course will teach a step by step progression to a dependable roll. Learning to roll your boat upright will open the door to enjoying the rivers as opposed to being intimidated by them. Plus, learning in a safe and warm environment makes it all the more fun. Nose-plugs are highly recommended as a good majority of this class will be spent upside-down, some students also enjoy having goggles handy to be able to orient themselves and really see the roll.

Prerequisites: No rolling experience is necessary, but beginner kayaking skills and experience (Level A) are needed.

Cost: $150 course fee plus $10 pool admission for each pool session. Rental equipment (boat, spray skirt, and paddle) available by request.

Class Times & Dates: This is a series of three classes. The classes will meet from 1:00 - 3:00 pm on the following dates:
    March 31
    April 14

This introductory course is based on well-established ACA (American Canoe Association) standards and is designed for people who have little or no whitewater or kayaking experience. You will learn about kayaks, essential gear, basic paddle strokes & techniques, river safety, and we'll introduce you to the kayak (Eskimo) roll*, (getting your kayak upright after capsizing).

It begins in the safe environment of an indoor pool during three, two-hour sessions where a kayak, paddle and spray skirt will be provided. You’ll be taught the basic elements & skills of whitewater kayaking before you get on moving water.

The course will conclude during a weekend in May (Flat Water/Moving Water Weekend) where on Saturday, we’ll meet at a lake in the Denver area that allows more time and space to practice the skills you’ve learned at the pool. On Sunday, you’ll get on moving water for the first time and learn about reading whitewater, river features and maneuvering your kayak. The location on Sunday will not be determined until a few days beforehand as it’s dependent on river levels. We hope to keep it in the Denver area, but it may require a drive to a river with the appropriate level of water and difficultly. Students will need to provide their own kayaks & essential gear for this weekend. If you don’t own your own gear, we’ve been able to arrange with area kayaking shops to rent kayaks & gear to students at discounted rates in the past.

*Note: This course will introduce you to rolling but it’s not the focus of this course and its unlikely students will master this skill. Colorado Whitewater offers classes that focus specifically on rolling. These classes would be appropriate of students who’ve completed the Beginner Course or have previous kayaking and whitewater experience.

    Prerequisites: None

Cost:  $150 course fee plus $10 pool admission for each pool session. Includes three 2-hour pool sessions, the flat-water/moving water weekend and rental equipment (boat, spray skirt, and paddle) for the pool sessions.

Class Times & Dates: This is a series of three indoor pool classes and the outdoor Flat Water Moving Water Weekend. The classes will meet from 3:00 - 5:00 pm on the following dates:

    • March 31
    • April 14
    • April 28

The Flat Water Moving Water Weekend will be held on May 4 & May 5, location and times TBD.

This intermediate course will help you to develop the skills necessary to safely run advanced whitewater. This is not an all encompassing course--someone cannot go from being comfortable on class III to comfortable on class IV from a two day course. We will focus on teaching drills and techniques that will help you take your paddling to the next level. Please come ready to work and have fun.

    Pool Workout

Day 1, Sunday afternoon: Taking your skills to the next level requires work and we’re going to give you tools to help you help yourself. We’ll start off with a series of warm up drills that will get your blood moving and help you practice your strokes, body/boat awareness, and edging. These drills come from an intersection of slalom, freestyle, and creeking techniques.

After the warm up drills we’ll focus on strokes and techniques including a video session. You’ll get to see how you are doing and will get advice from the group.

Solid strokes help you to avoid difficult situations, but sometimes those situations can’t be avoided. We’ll continue with a series of fun drills that incorporate rolling. We’ll tailor based upon how the class is doing.

We’ll wrap up the pool session with a discussion of how to apply some of the drills and techniques in moving water. We’ll also talk about gear and cover some of the qualities of gear you need to consider as you step up your game.

    Moving Water

Day 2, Weekday evening: The second day of this two day course will be on moving water. It is optional, but you must have participated in the pool session to join us on the river. Exact location and time TBD based upon river levels - the group will decide during the pool session.

Our goal is to practice advanced moves in class II/III whitewater. We are going to make easier sections of whitewater more challenging and more fun by applying what we learned in the pool to moving water. We’ll augment basics like eddy turns and peelouts with body position and momentum and ratchet things up from there. What we’ll do depends upon the current river level and conditions (options include ferrying onto a wave, microboofs, rolling in various conditions).

We’ll take a break and discuss as a group was has worked for us and where we’ve had some difficulties. Then we’ll put together some of the moves we’ve practiced into a course. We’ll take turns running the course and giving each other advice. Our goal is to give you the skills to make up your own training routines in the future. You’ll also develop your skills in effectively critiquing yourself and others. You will never look at class II/III the same way again.

    Prerequisites

Before taking this class you’ll want to be comfortable practicing your roll repeatedly and paddling class II/III whitewater. It will be a bit chilly in the early season water, so a drysuit is highly recommended.

    Details

Cost:  $90 course fee plus $10 pool admission for each pool session.

If you are looking to brush up on your roll after a long winter or are looking for feedback to get a more consistent roll this 2 hour clinic will provide you with direct feedback that should help you on your path to improving your roll. Nose plugs are recommended as a good majority of this class time will be spent upside-down.

Prerequisites: Previous rolling experience is assumed since the class will not be introducing the roll from scratch. Please see Intensive Roll Course if you are looking to learn to roll from scratch.

Cost:  $40 course fee plus $10 pool admission for pool session.  Rental equipment (boat, spray skirt, and paddle) available by request.

The river has peaked, the water is getting warmer... it is the perfect time to visit, or revisit, the Arkansas River this summer.  Milk Run, Brown's Canyon, Fractions, Numbers - they are all waiting for you!  This will be one of the most fun events CW holds all year!  Camping will take place at a new location with some fun new events, so please make sure to double check the details.

Camping and kayaking are free, so come out out and  join your CW friends for a weekend on the Arkansas River!

    Details

Who:  You (You must be a current CW member - please renew or join on line if you're not)

What:  Camping and Paddling, all abilities welcome

When:  Friday, July 19th – Sunday, July 21st (Meeting at 9:30am Sat & Sun).

Where:  We will be camping off South Main Street near "the beach" just south of the Midland Stop Coffee Shop. There will be a strict 10 PM noise ordinance!  Please also note that no fires will be allowed, but there is a large firepit at the beach music venue that can be used until quiet hours at 10 PM.

    Contact: Brooke Smith

    River Time

Trips will be organized each morning at 9:30 am. See additional River information below. We still need committed leaders and sweeps! If you are willing to lead or sweep, please let Brooke know.

    Events

This year we will also try to have some fun events for everyone to partake in. Details are still being ironed out, but as of right now we're planning a tug of war on Friday and kayak polo will be on the docket for Saturday Evening. We'll also have access to the pond so we will also have a location to work on rolls in flat water.

    Facilities

There will portable toilet facilities available but you'll need to bring water and everything else. Pack out your trash. Be prepare for any kind of weather.

    Fire Restrictions (TBD)

There will most likely be a stage 2 fire ban. This means no charcoal or wood fires. Propane appliances with a switch are OK. Extra battery powered lighting might also be a good idea for social hours in the evenings.

    River Conditions and Responsibilities:

Flows could potentially be low this year. Conditions change drastically with water level. Please research the run you are interested in doing. River levels and run information can be found at American Whitewater. Published resources include Colorado Rivers & Creeks 2 and Whitewater of the Southern Rockies. If you are unsure if your ability matches the run at the predicted flow, discuss your boating resume with the leader.

Please remember you are responsible for yourself on the river. You are also responsible to the group. Boat within your ability. Don't take unnecessary risks. Don't participate in a rescue if you are likely to become another victim. Cruise Coordinators have the right to deny inclusion on a trip for any reason and they also have the right to request a participant to leave the river for any reason.

Cruises and River Weekends are not instructional events. You should have the skills necessary to safely navigate the section of river to be run.

Only current CW members are allowed to participate in CW events. Please bring your completed liability waiver to give to the leader for each event (there will also be some available at Arkansas Weekend).

Please ensure you have all equipment necessary to run the river. You may be asked not to participate if your gear (or lack thereof) causes an unsafe environment. Remember the five essentials: kayak, paddle, helmet, skirt, pfd. AND, these other essential things: sturdy footwear, drytop (water temp is 56 degrees in Salida), float bags, water, food, sunscreen, knife, throw rope.

    Equipment/Gear Checklist

    Be sure that:

    • Your boat has foot pegs or a bulkhead (which have been adjusted to fit you)
    • Your boat has adequate flotation (inflatable bags that fit inside your boat)
    • Your float bags are secured, so that they will not come out of the boat and float down the river if your boat fills with water
    • Your spray skirt fits your boat and your body: you can put it on your boat on your own, you can release it with one hand, and it does not release on its own. We recommend a neoprene or similar spray skirt, instead of nylon
    • Your boat has a drain plug, (if it is equipped for one)
    • Your helmet and PFD fit properly
    • Your boat is padded so that you are comfortable, but snug inside
    • All your personal gear is labeled with your name and phone number. If you are renting equipment, please check each point listed above before you leave the shop; you may not be able to do anything about padding other than rent a different boat. Ask the staff to help you!

    • Dinner

    • We still need committed leaders and sweeps! If you are willing to lead or sweep, please let me know. Trips will be organized each morning at 9:30 am.   Thanks in advance!

Group potluck dinner Saturday evening (7-ish). You are encouraged to bring something fantastic! Remember to include a serving utensil. For the convenience of cooking we ask that all pets be leashed beginning around 5:30pm while people are preparing food through the conclusion of dinner. Our four-legged friends can be very curious about what is for dinner and might be interfering with the preparation. Thanks for understanding. Everyone should bring their own mess kit (plate/utensils). At the conclusion of dinner, please remove your dish from the group table.

Hope you can join us for a wonderful weekend on the Ark!

    ACA Swiftwater Rescue Clinic

Colorado Whitewater has partnered with RMOC for ACA Swiftwater Rescue Clinics for only $175 this year which is over 25% off of list price!    This clinic is for all Colorado Whitewater members who are kayakers, canoeists, rafters, duckie captains or just like splashing around in the river.

Somewhere, at sometime, you will wish you knew what to do in a river emergency. Just rescuing gear can turn into a nightmare, never mind rescuing a person. Quick response time and the knowledge to set up a rescue safely are skills you should have as a boater. Make this the year to bring your rescue skills to a higher level. Friends owe it to friends to be capable of river rescue.  Kayakers must be of Class II-III ability. Rescue lifejackets are considered personal equipment and are highly recommended. This clinic qualifies as an ACA sanctioned course.

Come join your CW friends for our last "River Weekend" of 2019!

We'll be camping on the Colorado River and doing runs on different sections of the Colorado, the Lower Blue & possibly others depending on river levels.

No need to register - just come have fun!

ORGANIZER: Brooke Smith, if you email please include "CW Colorado Weekend" in the subject line.

CAMPING: We will be camping at the Pumphouse Campground (Co Hwy 106, Kremmling, CO 80459) in group campsites A & B. Camping is free for members.

From Kremmling take Hwy 9 south about 1 mile to Grand County 1 (Trough Rough). Go west on Trough Road for 10 miles, and turn right onto Pumphouse access road. Take the road to the river! NOTE: There is a fee of $5 per day, payable to the BLM on entry for each vehicle.

CRUISES: There is plenty of beginner-level water in the vicinity, including the Pumphouse run which starts at our campsite.  More confident boaters are encouraged to volunteer to lead and/or sweep.  This is a great chance to get your sweeping or leading feet wet!  Other boating opportunities include the Lower Blue and Glenwood Canyon (although the latter is a bit of a drive).  We will be meeting at 9:30 am each morning to organize paddle groups.

GROUP POTLUCK DINNER on Saturday Evening:  You just KNOW that your fellow boaters will be hungry after a day on the river.  Here's our chance to put together a spontaneous, unplanned, yet well-balanced, delicious and nutritious feast that will be remembered during the long dark nights of coming winter. Remember to bring serving utensils, and your own plate and eating accessories.  Trash bags will be provided.  Anyone with a raft table/roller table, please throw it in your gear if we need it.  Don't forget your camp chairs!!!

Come one, come all, and help us round off the summer boating season in style!
