Mary Neilson Hawkins Mary began paddling at summer camp in North Carolina in the 1980s in a 13 feet long Perception Mirage (gasp!) doing classics such as the Nantahala, Chattanooga 3, French Broad etc. She continued through college on the Ocoee moving to much smaller boats as they became available. She moved to Gunnison in the mid 1990s, paddling along the Ark, Gore Canyon, Gunnison Gorge etc. Westwater is still her favorite! She has also been to California to paddle the Tuolumne, Merced, South & North Forks of the American. She has fond experiences on the Middle Fork of the Salmon in ID, and the Upper & Lower Gauley in WV as well. Mary got back into paddling in 2022 when her daughter went to summer camp in NC and she tagged along as a counselor. She is in her second year working with CW Kids Team.
